Restore points are usually created right before Windows shuts down, so theoretically I should be able to correlate corruption with the creation of a restore point, right? So back to this guy’s System Restore shenanigans: What does that mean for me? It could be System Restore, for all I know. Again: I got super, crazy lucky, and I don’t want to just throw that away. This is not something common to USB dongle capture cards. The lag is so small I can play extremely timing-sensitive rhythm games like Parappa the Rapper and Guitaroo Man directly through the capture card without issue, which for the $15 I paid for it is incredible. I don’t need to do this with my current capture card because there is basically zero input lag in the video signal, something that is practically unheard of with this kind of hardware. Replacing it not only would mean dropping a minimum of $60-$80 on new capture hardware, but probably having to deal with splitter cables and moving a TV closer to where the computer is. I got incredibly lucky and for as cheap as it was for me to buy, it works as well or better than capture cards that cost five times as much money. My capture card is immeasurably important to me a large percentage of my Youtube channel is thanks to it.

I would upgrade to Windows 7, but my capture card only really works on Windows XP. Apparently a funky System Restore point was to blame for his troubles, but there’s one key difference: he’s on Windows 7. So then what? Googling the error, the first page that comes up is this one, where somebody is describing the same problem I am: NTFS file system corruption (error 55), and the problem persists between two brand new HDDs. Given that we’re literally talking four years worth of “Thanks, this works perfectly.”, I am not so sure that it was the torrent I downloaded. I believe the man who made the torrent said the only differences between a stock Windows disc and this one was the inclusion of the up-to-date (by 2009 standards) versions of Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer.

This is not a “pro hacked” version of Windows, either. The torrent I got was years old, uploaded in 2009, with 3-5 pages of comments dating back years confirming that it was legit and functional.

But all I had was my old registration key, not the install CD itself, so I had to go to Demonoid and grab a copy there. This version of Windows is officially authenticated as not being stolen in any way. Yes, I torrented Windows, but that’s because I needed a disc that would accept my legitimate CD key. To clear the air: I did not steal Windows. Is it this version of Windows I torrented?

So, then, what’s the problem here? One would have to assume it is a software issue - something, perhaps in Windows, is corrupting the file system. I feel confident in my assumption that nothing is wrong with the physical HDD. Running HDDTune right now, it is telling me the HDD is “healthy”. I then used HDD Regenerator (a competing program to SpinRite) to check this drive three times, and it came back with a 100% clean bill of health all three times.

But, since SpinRite has an unrecoverable “Division Overflow Error” about halfway through scanning the 931mb of this HDD, I can’t see the full error report post-scan. I did not sit and watch SpinRite for the entire 3-5 hours it had to scan this HDD, but I do know that it found a couple of surface errors right at the beginning. I scanned it with SpinRite, and while SpinRite crashes at about 50%, that 50% mark is well beyond C:\ drive, where most of these errors seem to be occurring. So apparently it happened again last night. I’m gonna hide a lot of this behind the jump because I can imagine not everybody wants a big post like this on their tumblr dash, so if you’re interested in helping me track down what on earth is going on, by all means, click “read more” or whatever. The continued mysteries of the “ntfs disk error”.
